Unterholz Game Overview
Stepping into the PC game Unterholz, you find yourself in late 15th century Pomeranian landscape of a swampland gone bad, desolate, Gothic ruins, where you slowly sift through the grim realities of medieval legends and find out what lies behind a seemingly abandoned village nestled in swamps. It is not just a battle that is portrayed but a psychological battle that takes the player deep into a dark story that seems to be embedded in the environment of the game. This is where each aspect offers a part of the story, and you are to reveal the fate of lost souls of this abandoned world.
From what I gathered, Unterholz is all about creating an atmosphere; there is sword fighting here and there, and there are puzzles that need to be solved when one travels through the swamp. It’s a semi-nonlinear map which means that you can explore the story much deeper and most of the background information appears during the investigation. Due to the complete absence of any menus or loading screens interfering with the experience, one can fully immerse themselves in real authentic medieval world of the game, getting drawn into even the smallest of details, the sounds, the shadows.

Born with a development that took two years, Unterholz invests tons of work in historiographical details – be it the parchment written in medieval Pomeranian, armor that is as if an artist’s take on the realism of the 15th century. While voice-acting is not entirely necessary in such a game, the characters really do help build the mood of the game while each of them has something important to tell or to be kept secret. The mood here is not simply chivalry and valor; it is about revealing the alien and uncovering the truth layered atop layers of myth in a world of historical fact and horror.
